He said that, in his territory, competitors were constantly dropping off printed pieces about products and services that thought they could provide better than he could. He wanted something he could leave in their schools to put some heat back on them and to get the schools to let him in their door so he could make a presentation.

We know that many of you have Jostens corporate business cards, and we think they are one of the classiest cards around. They do everything a business card, in a business setting, is supposed to do; that is, they introduce you as a representative of Jostens. In fact, we carry two cards. We specifically use the Jostens corporate card when giving them to school administrators.

The message we have heard from Jostens Sales Management over the years is, “Get in touch with the administrators in your schools.” A lot of you heard that message and some of you asked me if I could design a card for you that could be left behind with a message for an administrator. Here’s something for the gatekeepers in your school. Many times it’s the office staff (the school secretary, the principal’s secretary, the bookkeeper, etc.) who can make or break you in a school. If it’s a prospect school, they are the gatekeepers. They keep you out. I hate when they won’t let you in to see an adviser or administrator when you are cold calling.

On the other hand, that’s exactly how I want the office staff at my own schools to be. I want them to NEVER let the competition in to see my adviser; that will make me the happiest yearbook rep you have ever met.

Play that Works is a wonderful book that anyone who teaches, advises or leads a group of people should have. It contains more than 80 proven methods of “play” that will help your adviser make his or her group into a cohesive and industrious unit so they can do their “work.”

There’s not much we don’t know about Workshops.

We have been with Jostens for more than 30 years. Sadly, that is now longer than some Jostens reps have been alive. And we have been doing yearbook and technology workshops in Spring, Summer and Fall for the entire time. We have run big workshops, and we have run tiny seminars. We can help you run your workshop, we can help you promote your workshop or we can teach at your workshop. When it comes to workshops, we do it all.

Need to appeal to administrators? Then you need YourSchool

In 2001, then President of Jostens (and my long-time friend) Val Williams suggested that I produce the same type of newsletter for scholastic and yearbook reps to send to their administrators. Something that would educate and inform them about graduation, motivation and more. Thus YourSchool was born. We have been creating it five times each year since then.
